Thank you for regularly checking my blog!  To make things easier for you, I have decided to use Schoology updates to post our weekly agenda.  This post will be out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings.  All in class work, quizzes, and homework will be posted along with reminders or important info!

I am back after a short hiatus!

We are finally starting our new unit on LIGHT!  I am very excited to explore the world of electromagnetism with you all! :)

Today: Students compared artificial light and natural light.  Then we completed pre-lab for Lab P2: Area of Illumination

Today: Students finished building their penguin dwellings and conducted Trial #1 today.  Students collected quantitative data to calculate the percent lost of their ice cube penguin as it sat in the test oven for 10 minutes.

Homework: Look around your house.  What makes a house energy efficient?  What changes could you make in your house to decrease the energy transfer?

Today: Students began to build their penguin dwellings with their engineering groups.  Groups have a 100 dollar budget for materials and will be able to improve their design based on results from the first trial run tomorrow.

Today: Students began the Criterion B: Save the Penguins Summative.  This is a week long engineering project.  Students will work in groups but will be judged on their use of the scientific method during the design cycle.  A copy of the rubric is available on Schoology.

Today: Students began Lab P38: Heat Exchange of Hot and Cold Water.  In this investigation, students will attempt to predict how many calories are lost or gained by hot or cold water when they are mixed together in a calorimeter cup.

Learning Target: I will INQUIRE about how to calculate heat loss or gain.

Today: Students practiced using the heat formula to calculate the calories gained or lost during energy transfer. Students first practiced calculations with water as the substance.  Then they practiced calculating with substances such as copper, gold and silver.  Periods 2,3 and 6 took a heat quiz at the end of class.

Homework: If students did not finish in class - the BLUE heat homework 2A or 2B is due tomorrow!

Today in Class: Students graphed their data from lab P37 and made conclusions about the relationship between heat and temperature based on those trends.  Then students took notes on the Heat Formula and practiced calculations.

Today:  Mr. Zutz went through the agenda and highlighted rules during the first 20 minutes of class!  Then students completed their lab safety quizzes and wrote about their ice cream story.  This was an activity to lead into our first unit "Save the Penguins" which focuses on Heat energy!

Today: Students presented their lab safety skits to the class and special guest, Randy Zutz - 8th grade dean.  Then students completed the lab safety quiz on schoology.  If a score of 13 or lower was achieved (out of 17) an INC will be in the gradebook.   Your student must study and retake the quiz before being allowed in the back for labs.

A safety contract will be sent home Monday.  If you want to print a copy of the contract from the schoology page, feel free to read through this weekend and sign.

Today: Group Work Norms were introduced to students.  These are six expectations for successful lab experiences this year!  Students focused on norm #5 and worked in groups for a design challenge!  Each group got 10 marshmallows and 20 spaghetti noodles. The goal is to build the tallest tower possible!  Tomorrow they will get a chance to improve their structure.

Group Work Norms:
1. Everyone has something to LEARN
2. Everyone has something to OFFER
3. Be willing to experience DISCOMFORT
4. It is your RIGHT to ask for help, and your DUTY to assist
5. Everybody Helps
6. Help others do things for THEMSELVES!

We will have a great year if all students can embody these norms!

Welcome to 8th Grade Science!

Students are working on their end of the year projects - a weather log analysis.  Students will use the data collected in their weather logs over the last 14 days for SLP and a city of their choice, and complete an analysis of the weather conditions.  Graphing, analysis of information and a Travel Agent report are all components. Today: Students began to think about evidence of life and how is has changed (Evolution) over geologic time.  Students watched a Cosmos episode and reflected on evidence presented during the video as well as their own thoughts regarding the Theory of Evolution.

Students reviewed plate tectonics and mapped the locations of earthquakes and volcanoes around the world.  The class then discussed relationships between these events and the location of the occurrences on earth. Today:  I am at a conference today and there is a guest teacher!  Students will work on their two graphs using data collected in P22.  They will create a density graph to show the mass:volume ratio of their unknown liquid.  They will also create a boiling phase change graph showing the substances temperature over time until it reaches boiling point.

Learning Target: I will use proper safety procedures while practicing with the Bunsen burner.

Yesterday: Students started class with a pop quiz on Temperature Conversions!  Then we began Bunsen Burner safety!  This is a very big deal as the Bunsen Burner needs to be treated with care and respect!

Today: Students will test their knowledge of Bunsen Burner safety and try lighting one.  They will not be allowed to use the burners until they pass the knowledge test.  The second half of class, we will pre-lab for our Color Lab on Monday.  It is the first lab we will use with a Bunsen Burner!

Class time:  Today students practiced temperature conversions with white boards and markers. Then they had time to complete their homework.  At the end of class, students answered a 3 question check in.
