Thank you for regularly checking my blog!  To make things easier for you, I have decided to use Schoology updates to post our weekly agenda.  This post will be out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings.  All in class work, quizzes, and homework will be posted along with reminders or important info!

I am back after a short hiatus!

We are finally starting our new unit on LIGHT!  I am very excited to explore the world of electromagnetism with you all! :)

Today: Students compared artificial light and natural light.  Then we completed pre-lab for Lab P2: Area of Illumination

*Scientist of the Quarter reports! Get the 2nd quarter report out of the way by submitting your report in the next week!

Today: Students finished building their penguin dwellings and conducted Trial #1 today.  Students collected quantitative data to calculate the percent lost of their ice cube penguin as it sat in the test oven for 10 minutes.

Homework: Look around your house.  What makes a house energy efficient?  What changes could you make in your house to decrease the energy transfer?

Learning targets:

I will use my knowledge of heat transfer to construct a penguin  dwelling.

I will practice the group work norm be willing to experience  discomfort to be an open-minded team member.

Today: Students began to build their penguin dwellings with their engineering groups.  Groups have a 100 dollar budget for materials and will be able to improve their design based on results from the first trial run tomorrow.

Today: Students completed three investigative mini-labs on heat transfer.

Today: Students began the Criterion B: Save the Penguins Summative.  This is a week long engineering project.  Students will work in groups but will be judged on their use of the scientific method during the design cycle.  A copy of the rubric is available on Schoology.

Today: Students began Heat Summative 1 - Knowledge.  This is an IB and standard graded assessment. Students will have through tomorrow to finish the test.

LEARNING TARGET: I will further INQUIRE about the calorie and its relationship to objects gaining or losing heat.

Today: Students began Lab P38: Heat Exchange of Hot and Cold Water.  In this investigation, students will attempt to predict how many calories are lost or gained by hot or cold water when they are mixed together in a calorimeter cup.

Learning Target: I will INQUIRE about how to calculate heat loss or gain.

Today: Students practiced using the heat formula to calculate the calories gained or lost during energy transfer. Students first practiced calculations with water as the substance.  Then they practiced calculating with substances such as copper, gold and silver.  Periods 2,3 and 6 took a heat quiz at the end of class.

Homework: If students did not finish in class - the BLUE heat homework 2A or 2B is due tomorrow!

Today in Class: Students graphed their data from lab P37 and made conclusions about the relationship between heat and temperature based on those trends.  Then students took notes on the Heat Formula and practiced calculations.

Homework: Heat Worksheet 1A or 1B - due tomorrow

Learning Target: I will inquire about the amount of heat gained or lost when water cools down.

Today: Students reviewed heat transfer methods, practiced calculating final temperature and completed pre-lab for P37:  Calorie, a Unit if Heat.

Learning Target:   I will use inquiry to determine a formula for predicting the final temperature of a mixture of water with different starting temperatures.

Today: Students finished collecting data for lab P34: Predicting Temperature.  Then they worked on a formula for predicting temperature.

Today: Students finished the P34: Predicting Temperature pre-lab and then spent the remainder of class collecting data from 4-5 trials.

Learning Target: I will use inquiry to determine a formula for predicting the final temperature when mixing water of different temperatures and quantities.

Today: Students reviewed Heat and Temperature and then watched a BrainPOP on heat (available on Schoology in the heat unit folder).  Then they took a Heat vs Temperature check in (schoology).  Lastly, students completed the pre-lab for P34: Predicting Temperature.

Homework: SYLLABUS and SAFETY CONTRACTS!

Today: Students partner read about temperature and heat and took notes.  Then we discussed the concepts as a whole class.

Learning Target:  I will think about the relationship between buoyancy and temperature of balloons in water.

Today: Students discussed what they remembered about buoyancy from 7th grade.  Then completed Lab P13: Balloon and Water systems.  Tomorrow students will draw conclusions.

Today: Students wrapped up insulators and conductors with a large group discussion, then a check in on schoology.  At the end of class we reviewed the class syllabus.
